Review of the Sage Z-Axis Fly Rod

The Sage Z-Axis is one of the newest Sage fly rods. As a replacement for Sage’s XP rod, it was designed to be lighter, stronger, and faster than their previous model. How did they do? Excellent. The Z-Axis has a noticeably improved feel when casting compared to the XP and even more expensive fly rods from other manufacturers. There are several main traits of the Sage Z-Axis that make it stand out from the competition:

  1. Light - Due to the G5 graphite design and construction process that has removed all unnecessary material, this rod is lighter than the older XP.
  2. Fast action - Although it’s similar to the XP with less than 20 feet of line out, the Sage Z-Axis really starts to excel with 30+ feet of line out.
  3. Good line feel - The tapered tip design gives the angler an unprecedented feel for the movements of their line.
  4. Strong - although they removed the fiberglass scrim that strengthens some of their other fly rods, Sage was able to maintain the strength of this rod, although it may be a little more prone to clumsy breakage (accidentally smacking a rock with it). Luckily, there’s point #5 below.
  5. Lifetime warranty - sometimes warranties just sound like marketing fluff, that is, until you find a company that really stands behind their warranties. Sage is one of those companies that stand behind their products.
